The platform crunchyroll issued a press release informing that the new film by the director makoto shinkai, Suzume no Tojimari (Suzume’s Door Locking), will be released in theaters in Mexico and Brazil on January 13, 2023. Additionally, the dates for the rest of Latin America will be announced soon in other communications.
The distribution of this tape in the West is carried out by Sony Pictures Entertainment, Wild Bunch International Y eurozoom. In May, during the Cannes Film Festival, crunchyroll acquired the global (excluding Asia) distribution and marketing rights to TOHO for this new film by Makoto Shinkai, produced by CoMix Wave Films Y STORY Inc.
Suzume no Tojimari debuted in theaters in Japan on November 11 and has surpassed 5.6 million admissions. The film has also grossed 7.5 billion yen (approximately US$55 million) by holding the No. 1 position at the Japanese box office for 3 consecutive weeks. The film will be distributed in the main territories:
- In North America, crunchyroll is the only distributor.
- In Latin America, Australia/New Zealand, the Middle East and parts of Europe, the film will be distributed by crunchyroll Y Sony Pictures Entertainment.
- In French-speaking and German-speaking Europe, the film will be jointly distributed by crunchyroll, sony pictures, Wild Bunch International Y eurozoom.
For decades the award-winning creator, writer and director makoto shinkai has been considered a visionary within the area of animation, with the two recent films kimi no na wa (your name) (2016) and Tenki no Ko (Weathering With You) (2019), which have catapulted him as one of the leading animation filmmakers internationally. Tenki no Ko was selected to compete for Japan in the category of Best International Film in the 2020 delivery of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Awards and nominated in four categories at the 47th Annual Awards Annie Awards including Best Independent Animated Feature.
Synopsis of Suzume no Tojimari
On the other side of the door, there was time in its entirety… Suzume no Tojimari is a coming-of-age story of its 17-year-old protagonist, Suzume, set in various disaster-stricken locations across Japan, where it must close. doors causing devastation.
Suzume’s journey begins in a quiet town in Kyushu (located in southwestern Japan) when she meets a young man who tells her: “I’m looking for a door.” What Suzume finds is a single weathered gate standing amidst the ruins as if protected from whatever catastrophe might strike.
